An Earthfall / Theatr Brycheiniog Co-Production
Dynamic Dance Music and Film

Earthfall Twitter UpdatesSo we have said goodbye to At Swim Two Boys. The final run of performances have been great. The show headed North to Lincoln Drill Hall for a great two night run before a well earned Easter break. The production returned with another 2 nighter down in Southampton, before taking its final plunge back in Wales at the Riverfront, Newport.
The last show in Newport, coincided with another Art Exhibition from the At Swim Art Collective, whose exhibtion played host to the final ever, emotional post-show talk. We said goodbye to the boys and the musicians (for now) and the show. But there is still lots going on.
The final week of the show went hand in hand with a week long residency at Ridings Winterbourne Acadamy, ending in a performance with 40 students and musicians. Earthfall have been working with Ridings for over 10 years and this years performance was as good as any. To see photos and clips keep an eye on our Earthfall participation Forum on Facebook here.
Keep an eye on all the activity thats going on through Facebook and Twitter.
Well it has been a busy couple of weeks.
The At Swim Art Collective was a great success with a good turn out for both the private opening and the public exhibition on the 16th and 17th March. Thanks to Chapter for letting us use Y Llofft for the exhibiton which featured 3 artists work ranging from stop motion projection to hanging installtions. Well done to the sutdents involved in putting together their first professional exhibition. You can see their work and find out more by going to

The show it self enjoyed a great sell out run in Chapter the week before, then headed up to Aberystwyth Arts Centre, for two jam packed nights and a 2 day residency with Coleg Ceredigion. You can see some photos and films from the residency here:

We then moved on to Artrix, Bromsgrove for another day of workshops and a great evening show, followed by a great Q&A with New College. Then last week we were in Salford at The Lowry, with another great crowd and a standing ovation for the peformers. Finally we ended the week with a show in Galeri, Caernarfon straight across the water from Ireland and the novels setting.
This week we head up to Lincoln, which in its earliest history as an Iron Age settlement meant 'The Pool' (very apt) The Drill Hall is a great venue and it promises to be a good show.
Next Saturday At Swim Arts Collective are putting on an exhibition of their work, based on At Swim Two Boys and movement observed in a workshop last autumn. Art Collective is made up of four Fine Art and Digital Media students from the University of Glamorgan and Cardiff Metropolitan. Anna Polya, L.M.H.C, Lee Brookes and Jess De’Ath have come together to create an artistic interpretation of Earthfall’s production ‘At Swim Two Boys’. There is a free public performance on Saturday the 17th March. 10:00-18:00 Join the facebook group here.
The tour has been great so far, some really nice reviews which you can read in our Audience Review section. We are off to Aberystwyth Arts Centre next Mon/Tues and then Artrix Arts Centre on Thurs 15th. So a busy week ahead. Hope you can make it.
Earthfall's education and participation team are doing a one week physical theatre residency in collaboration with RWCMD music students and Bath Spa University dance students. It is only the beginning of our second week residency at Riverside Studios in London and we are already COMPLETELY SOLD OUT! Which proves the point that this is a show well worth coming to see. Luckily we still have 9 other destinations on our UK tour and will hopefully get the pleasure to see you at one of these alternative venues. Coming to see the show may even fullfill that longing to visit another beautiful city in the UK aside from the big smog (smoke) - and now we are handing this opportunity on a plate - seize the moment.
After a gruelling week of freezing rehearsals in Treorchy it is finally time to embark on the UK tour journey - to London we go. 160 bin bags are joining us for opening night tonight, the beginning of our 3 week London run at The Riverside Studios. We are extremly pleased to be in both Time Out's 'Critics Choice' for the week and The Times' 'Daily Register'. Spaces are still available for our Professional Development Workshop at The Place on Friday 10th. So if you want to learn from our two stars we advise you book your space for the workshop now. Tickets for the show are selling like hot potatoes and the only way to guarentee a seat is by booking in advance.
2012 is promising to be a busy year for us. At Swim Two Boys kicks off on 7th Feb- 25th at The Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, before heading out across the UK and ending in Newport, Riverfront on the 25th April. Fitting for a show that uses 1000 litres of water per performance that we open and close in two rivers.

We are very excited about the next few months and hope to see you all around at a show or a class.
After a great success all over the UK on a sell-out tour, including a great four night run at WMC last week, At Swim Two Boys will hold its last performance in Pegasus, Oxford on the 1st and 2nd December. Our record audience numbers so far has been amazing and would like to thank everybody for their nice comments and support. We will be back on February with At Swim Two Boys Spring Tour 2012. You can find out more about our spring dates clicking on the tab “dates 11/12”.

Cardiff Metropolitan University, Newport Film School and University of Glamorgan, led by Earthfall’s Education and Participation team and assistance from Literature Wales, created a beautiful piece combining movement, film, projection and poetry. The students performed a moving (literally and metaphorically) 30 minute show in the WMC based on the narrative of At Swim Two Boys novel and the current production. Improvisation movements and choreography performed inside and outside the building were mixed with poetry verses read by the creative writer Simon Munday. Everyone involved had a great experience working with different organisations and art-forms and the performance was a culmination of a long hard week’s work and an excellent way to bring the residency to an end.
The Education and Participation programme is an integral part of Earthfall’s mission. Jess Cohen co-artistic director of At Swim Two Boys-, together with our education team and literature Wales, are doing a residency at the Wales Millennium Centre to create a new site-specific piece which combines movement, film and projection. Students from Newport Film School, Cardiff Metropolitan University and University of Glamorgan are taking part on this project and the performance will be held on Friday 25th November at 18:00.

Another two sold out performances at Unity theatre and a great success at Dance City, Newcastle, with Jamie O’Neill reading. After a day off for the dancers, At Swim Two Boys is moving to Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield where tickets are selling out fast. If you would like to see the show, click here to find out the dates of our last performances in Bath, Cardiff and Oxford.

At Swim Two Boys is on its busiest bit of the tour (we are touring to eight venues within eleven days). After a great succes at the Gulbenkian in Canterbury with an audience of over three hundred on the first night, At Swim Two Boys is at Unity Theatre in Liverpool on the 8th and 9th November and at Dance City in Newcastle on the 11th and 12th November. Find attached an advert of our performance in Newcastle tube.
Jamie O’Neill, who had been compared to the great Irish writers Oscar Wilde and James Joyce and was honoured with the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Male Fiction for his novel At Swim Two Boys, will be holding a post-show discussion at Dance City in Newcastle on the 11th November and a book reading on the 12th November at 2pm. The audience will have the opportunity to find out several aspects about the show such as how they transform the novel into a performance, Jamie’s role in the creative process or how they stage dance in 1000 litres of water.
South Hill Park in Bracknell was our last stop on our tour and once again Daniel Connor and Murilo Leite performed incredibly in water, and the two musicians Sion Orgon and Frank Naughton played amazing live music. We continue touring this week to Torch Theatre, Milford Haven on Tuesday 1st November and to Gulbenkian, Canterbury on 4th-5th November. Our tour is supported by Arts Council of Wales and Arts Council of England, and if you would like to support Earthfall’s production as well, please click here. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Laughing is one of the most efficacious way to calm your nerves down. Before our performance at Rose Theatre in Ormskirk the dancers keep rehearsing and having fun as you can see in the picture attached. Tickets were sold out again and we had a two page waiting list to get tickets. If you want to book tickets for At Swim Two Boys for our next venue South Hill Park, please click on our tour dates to find out details.
After At Swim Two Boy’s great success in Brecon, all the team moved to MAC in Birmingham as the tour continued. Once again tickets were sold out with Daniel O’Connor and Murilo Leite performing incredibly in the water. “Absolutely breathtaking”, “I love it. I love the intensity, the emotion between the two boys and the extreme movement and lifts”, “everything came together to create a truly outstanding performance” are some of the audience reviews. If you have watched the show, please do not forget to leave your review clicking on “audience reviews”. You can win an Earthfall goodie bag! Next tour stop: Thursday 20th October in Ormskirk.
After much anticipation, the opening night of At Swim Two Boys arrived at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon. After a month and a half of rehearsals, all the Earthfall team were very excited about the first night of the performance. Tickets were sold out and the show was a great success with the two dancers performing amazingly in the water. It has been a great beginning for the tour. If you would like to find out more about At Swim Two Boys next venues please click on tour dates 11/12.
Thank you to everyone at the Parc Theatre in Treorchy where At Swim Two Boys have been rehearsing for the past six weeks. With only four days left to the opening night at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, At Swim Two Boys is moving to there to start technical rehearsals. Attached is a photo of the dancers rehearsing in the stage filled entirely in water.
Jess Cohen, co-artistic director of At Swim Two Boys and Jamie O'Neill, were able to share with us the insights of At Swim Two Boys Performance at the Dance Insights talk in Wales Millennium Centre. The discussion was hosted by the BBC's Nicola Haywood Thoma, with the audience invited to ask questions for Jamie and Jess. It was truly fascinating to find out how they transform the novel into a performance, why they have decided to do a revival of At Swim Two Boys and how the dancers cope dancing in the cold water among other interesting matters. If you did not have the opportunity to attend the chat, keep an eye out for the short video coming soon.
“Our kick was to do it in water. We wanted an easily tourable piece. Then came the water!” Jess Cohen
“To enjoy this piece you don't have to have read the book, you just have to buy it.” Jamie O'Neill
“It's not static. It has a nebulous feeling. Everyone who watches it will get something different.” Jess Cohen
“You learn to envy the art of performance.” Jamie O’Neill
Jamie O'Neill, the Irish author of the award winning novel At Swim Two Boys, has just landed at Cardiff Airport to stay with Earthfall for the next weeks. We are all very happy to welcome Jamie, back into the fold. He was originally part of the creative team in 2005 and now re-joins us for rehearsals. After meeting the two dancers Dan and Murilo, Jamie had the pleasure of watching (through teary eyes) a full run through.

Only two weeks left until Earthfall start touring At Swim Two Boys all over the UK, our dancers, Daniel Connor and Murilo d’Imperio, are working hard rehearsing. Six years later, Terry Michael and Cai Tomos, the original performers of At Swim Two Boys in 2005, return to assist with rehearsals for this revival. Attached is a beautiful photo of the dancers showing the same moment from 2005 and 2011.
Become part of our Water Supporter campaign and help off-set the cost of the water used in At Swim Two Boys. In our current production of At Swim Two Boys, we will be using up to 60,000 litres of water throughout the tour. To help support the commercial cost of this water and to help give something back, Earthfall will give 10% of all donations received to Water Aid. Thank you for you continued support.

After joining The Guardian Book Swap initiative, we decided to leave a copy of At Swim Two Boys by Jamie O’Neill in a hidden place, waiting to be found. We popped the bookplate sticker on the cover and dropped it off at Chapter. Finally yesterday, after three days of waiting to be discovered, somebody found it and tweeted this lovely picture (which was also sent to The Guardians Twitter account). We hope that the book was a great pleasure for the reader. So we recommend keeping both eyes open as you could be the next person to discover a hidden book. For more information on The Guardian Book Swap click here. To buy a copy of the book please visit http://www.atswimtwoboys.com/index.php/the_book.
Today we welcomed back our two wonderful musicians Sion Orgon and Frank Naughton: This was the first time for Sion on At Swim Two Boys, but Frank was one of the original two musicians along with Roger Mills who composed the music for the 2005/06 production. The production slowly comes together, as now rehearsals not only have water but also live music and an internal audience. The countdown to the opening begins.
A minor setback today meant we were back to dry rehearsals. The set has a few small leaks and we had to wait for the technicians to solve the problem, which they promptly did.
Water is one of the main elements (symbols) in Jaime ONeil’s book. Therefore after an intense week of dry rehearsals we start rehearsals on the wet set. All of us had been eagerly anticipating this moment. Murilo and Daniel were very excited but a little shocked at the sensation of feeling the cold water over their bodies while they dance. We suspect it was colder than they imagined.
Yesterday we had our first rehearsal injury: Murilos’ nose. Accidents are sometimes part of the job but luckily, Murilo is fine and he has been back rehearsing. This minor incident would not stop us.

The two new dancers, Danny and Murilo, looking forward to the next couple of months.
The first day of rehearsal are under way. Straight in at the deep end, Daniel Connor and Murilo Leite have been welcomed into the Earthfall family. It has been great to have Cai Tomos and Terry Michael back with us. They will be with the team for rehearsals over the next month. A great first day with lots more to come.
Earthfall launch their new website atswimtwoboys.com with detailed information about this coming autumns production.
